Sound Energy Marks a New Era in Gas Production

Sound Energy has officially commenced its gas commissioning activities at the TE-5 Horst development project within the Tendrara production concession in eastern Morocco. This marks a significant milestone for the company, as it moves closer to establishing a reliable supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet growing demand in the region. The production concession is a joint venture where Mana Energy holds a 55% stake and serves as the operator, while Sound Energy owns 20% and the remaining 25% is held by ONHYM, Morocco's national hydrocarbons and minerals office.

The initiation of gas flow into the gas gathering system (GGS) signifies the readiness of the infrastructure to support long-term supply commitments. With the TE-6 production well already operational, the project is poised to leverage existing resources efficiently, ensuring a swift transition from commissioning to commercial production.

Contextual Background of the Tendrara Project

The Tendrara gas project is strategically positioned in Morocco, a country increasingly recognized for its potential in the natural gas sector. The region is not only rich in hydrocarbon resources but is also pivotal for Europe's energy diversification strategy amid geopolitical tensions. The project's development aligns with Morocco's broader ambitions to enhance its energy independence and manage its domestic energy consumption effectively.

Sound Energy's entry into the commissioning phase follows a series of exploratory and developmental activities that have laid the groundwork for significant gas production. The gas to be produced at Tendrara will be directed to a micro-LNG plant, with an established gas sales agreement in place with Afriquia Gaz, which is positioned to purchase 100 million normal cubic meters of gas annually at competitive pricing.

Furthermore, the completion of a binding gas sales agreement underscores the project's viability. Under this agreement, Afriquia Gaz will acquire gas at a price indexed to both the European TTF and US Henry Hub benchmarks, ensuring a market-responsive pricing mechanism that benefits both parties.

Details of the Commissioning and Infrastructure Development

The successful installation of the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, a vital component for the GGS, was completed by November 28, marking the final step in preparing the infrastructure for gas production. The flow of gas from the TE-6 well into the GGS demonstrates the effective collaboration between Sound Energy and its partners, showcasing the technical capabilities of the project team.

Italian oil and gas services company Italfluid Geoenergy (ITF) has been engaged to design and manage the micro-LNG plant, which is critical for processing the gas extracted from the Tendrara concession. The operational plan includes utilizing existing wells and adding new drilling to meet the projected production plateau over the next decade.

Revenue generation from the LNG sales is anticipated to commence in late Q1 or Q2 of 2026, signaling a turning point for Sound Energy as it transitions into a revenue-generating entity. The expected cash flow will not only support ongoing operational costs but will also fund future expansion efforts within the region.

    Implications for the Industry

The commencement of gas production at Tendrara holds significant implications for the Moroccan energy landscape and the broader regional market. As domestic consumption of natural gas rises, projects like Tendrara are integral to reducing dependency on imported energy sources. This transition is particularly crucial given the global energy market's volatility and the increasing pressure for sustainable energy practices.

Moreover, the competitive pricing structure established through the sales agreement with Afriquia Gaz positions the Tendrara project as an attractive option for local industry players. The project's capacity to provide a steady gas supply can bolster Morocco's industrial sector, potentially leading to increased investment and economic growth.

Additionally, the successful implementation of the micro-LNG facility reflects an emerging trend within the industry to adopt smaller-scale, modular gas processing solutions. This approach not only enhances operational flexibility but also caters to localized demand without the need for large-scale infrastructure.

Looking Ahead: Strategic Considerations for Sound Energy

As Sound Energy navigates this pivotal phase of its operations, the focus will undoubtedly shift towards optimizing production and planning for the second phase of the project development. The company's CEO, Majid Shafiq, expressed optimism over reaching revenue-generating status and emphasized the importance of the upcoming final investment decision (FID) for further expansion.

The path forward involves not only maximizing the potential of the current wells but also exploring additional drilling opportunities to sustain production levels. The strategic alignment with Afriquia Gaz and other stakeholders will be crucial in maintaining the project's momentum and ensuring long-term success.

In conclusion, the commissioning of gas production at Tendrara represents a landmark achievement for Sound Energy and a meaningful development for the Moroccan energy sector. As the project evolves, it will undeniably play a critical role in shaping the future energy landscape of the region, providing insights into the operational practices and market dynamics that define modern gas production.

    The Bigger Picture

The Tendrara project serves as a microcosm of the broader trends shaping the global energy sector, where localized solutions and strategic partnerships are becoming increasingly vital. As the world pivots toward cleaner energy sources and seeks to balance economic growth with sustainability, projects like Tendrara will be in the spotlight, demonstrating the potential of natural gas in the transition to a greener energy future.
